The State of Black America

The National Urban League launched The State of Black America 2010 // JOBS: Responding to the Crisis (SOBA) report at its annual Legislative Policy Conference in Washington, DC.


The report outlines innovative steps that must be taken-including supporting small businesses and the emerging green economy, reforming education and expanding broadband access-to move this country and our urban communities forward toward full economic and social equity. The report presents the National Urban League's plan for creating jobs and includes the 2010 Equality Index,™ which examines African-American and Latino progress in economics, education, health, civic engagement and social justice. Authors include Dr. Bernard Anderson, Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, Dr. Valerie Rawlston Wilson, and Education Secretary Arne Duncan.

In this, the 34th edition of The State of Black America, the National Urban League responds to this crisis – it presents the National Urban League’s Plan for Creating Jobs and features analysis and recommendations from experts and leaders on specific steps to address the jobs crisis in urban communities. An all encompassing analysis is provided by in-depth examination of the relationship between jobs and education, healthcare, broadband access and environmentalism. The data and analysis in this report provide a blueprint for responding to this crisis.

The KEY take-aways at of the 2010 SOBA Event to be held August 11, 2010 will include:

Informing stakeholders and opinion leaders regarding the crisis in the minority community regarding jobs and educational resources; and

To identify and highlight key policy priorities, initiatives and strategies to get urban communities back to work (beginning with those advocated by the National Urban League in its SOBA publication)

Additionally, at the SOBA reception, the GSUL will identify and honor key legislators who have contributed to fulfilling the mission and vision of the Urban League, civil rights and economic equity.
